Last week, I joined a strategy offsite for the leadership of a client organization. This is no ordinary company – they have over 200 specialized advisors in EMEA in a tightly regulated niche market. High, high end. “My daily is a Bentley”, you know the type. Trusted, analytical, and with long-term client relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CIO kicked off the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to invest more in infrastructure as code<\/em>,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe want to automate AI deployment, scale faster in the cloud, and build a foundation to experiment with AI.\u201d We most likely need 6 months+ to get that to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one disagreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the commercial director leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI get that,\u201d she said. \u201cBut when will all this start changing the way our advisors<\/strong> work with clients?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a pause. Then she continued, borrowing a phrase I use with all my customers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHonestly, what we need\u2026 is <\/strong>business as code<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And just like that, the conversation moved from IT to the heart of the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GenAI is not an IT initiative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Too often, GenAI is framed as a digital innovation project. Something for the IT team to explore. Something you pilot on the side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But GenAI isn\u2019t about prompts or prototypes. It\u2019s about how your organization delivers value<\/strong> – smarter, faster, and at scale. We\u2019ve spent years building infrastructure as code<\/em>. That was step one. Now we\u2019re entering phase two: business as code<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business as code: how advisors work with AI agents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This advisory firm doesn\u2019t lack knowledge or ambition. The real bottlenecks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capacity. Consistency. Context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This isn\u2019t \u201crobot consultants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That\u2019s business as code<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The shift: from backend to frontstage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The CIO was right – infrastructure matters. No GenAI strategy works without scalable, secure foundations. But the real value is not in what AI does behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s in what clients see: sharper advice, faster service, and more proactive support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If AI stays in the IT department, it will always be a cost center<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
